Various groups have been working together to take forward the issue of voluntary self regulation of Reiki healing and teaching. This is to create some kind of national standards for Reiki practices so that clients can be assured of a quality standard from Reiki healers. Voluntary self regulation could pre-empt mandatory government regulation through an act of parliament.

One of the main Reiki groups, the The UK Reiki Federation has been working with the Natural Healthcare Council, a part of the Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health through the Reiki Regulatory Working Group. National Occupational Standards for Reiki have been finalised and agreed with Skills for Health and are available to view here. Anyone can give feedback and make comments about the standards.

The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council claims to be '...the national voluntary regulator for complementary healthcare practitioners in the UK' and Massage and Nutritional Therapists can register now. They anticipate that Reiki healers can register sometime in 2009. The General Regulatory Council For Complementary Therapies claims to be the '...independent regulator to establish a national register and protect the public by validating the status of all registered therapists'.
